About our island Kos

The endless beaches, turquoise waters, vegetation and abundant waters. Ancient and medieval monuments and imposing Italian buildings characterize Kos, the third largest island of the Dodecanese, just 4 miles from the Turkish coast.

The name “Kos” is most likely due to the daughter of the mythical king Merops, who was called Kos.

It is the home of the “father of medicine” Hippocrates (460-377 BC) and was inhabited from Neolithic times (5th-4th millennium BC). In the 14th century the island was occupied by the Knights Hospitallers, who reinforced the older castles and built new fortifications. During the Turkish occupation, the island was attacked by various invaders (Knights, Venetians, etc.), while during the Italian occupation (1912-1945), important monumental public buildings were built. It was officially incorporated with Greece in 1948.

The beaches of Kos

The island has many sandy beaches, of which the northern ones are more exposed to winds. The majority of the coast has been developed for tourism with easy access and services. The main ones for bathers are the following:

– In Kos town and its surroundings the sandy beach of Nomikos-Barbagianni. It is an organized beach with umbrellas and sunbeds, water sports, restaurants and bars. The sandy Zouroudi beach is organized with umbrellas and sunbeds, water sports, bars and loud music. The fine sand beach of the Nautical Club is an EU Blue Flag award winner. The white fine sand beach of Milos is also an EU Blue Flag award winner.
